So we are fairly new to the Albany, NY area. We have been here about 9 months and it has taken us a little bit longer than we thought to settle into the area. It is a very different place than Iowa. People keep to themselves more, the downtown is set up very differently than Des Moines and there is not much to do there unless you work there...and everything is much more spread out. We did find a great church that we are going to and some great people there, but it took us months to find it.
In Iowa we knew tons of people and were involved in the community and different outreach groups. When we moved here though, all the work changes, baby changes and life changes started to overshadow what we love doing...and that is meeting people and loving on them. So Josh and I decided to start volunteering with an organization that we felt really passionate about. We reached out to the AIDS Council of North Eastern NY to see if there were any volunteer opportunities for us. This organization provides financial and emotional support for those suffering with AIDS, HIV and Hepatitis C, to name just a few of their roles. The reasons for this particular group are specific but I will just go over a few.
First off if you have ever been sick with a disease that never goes away or suffered with something attacking your body, you know how debilitating, depressing and trapping that can feel. I, thank God, have never had to deal with anything like this but I have seen family members and dear friends suffer through diseases or sicknesses that just won't quit. Even the strongest get weary and need support. So we are hoping we will be able to, in some sort of way, lift these people up and support them in any way we could.
Second, we love Jesus and want other people to know him....and the only way of getting out of our Christian bubbles...is to get out of our Christian bubbles. It's safe in there for sure...but where is the fun in that? What's the point of staying in the safe zone? We want to get out, help hurting people and tell them about a love like they have never felt before...because there is hope in that! If you have something to look forward to, something better to come, there is hope for the future. When you are suffering from a disease it is very easy to feel like there is no light at the end...but with Jesus, in life or death, there is always something better to come!! What hope we have for the future!
Lastly, we just have a heart for people suffering with these specific diseases. For a number of personal reasons.
So..anyway, this is our first event that we will participate with the AIDS council and I hope you guys will support us! We will be ambassadors for their 11th Annual Dine Out For Life event. If you are in the Albany area, on April 24 come out to Friday's in Clifton Park for dinner and join Josh and I. That night, 20 percent of all food bills will be donated to the AIDS Council. If you are not from here consider donating...
Now friends, I never ask you to donate to things! Never! But this is a good cause and it would go to help a lot of hurting people in this area. So if you find it in your heart to throw a couple bucks this way...we would appreciate it!
If you want to donate click on THIS. This link will take you to the donation page. Then when you get there, put in the amount you want to donate and then where it says "who are your dining ambassadors?" Look for Josh and I. They will send you a receipt and this does count as a tax write-off for next year. Thanks for the support!
I am a follower of Jesus, a former television reporter, freelance writer, wife and a mom to a beautiful girl. I love Jesus, I have an obsession about living a healthy and chemical free life, I love to DIY crap and I love my family. So basically this is a blog about those things.
